Especially in cloudy weather, when light intensity constantly changes, an ultra-fast MPPT controller will improve energy collection by up to 30% compared to PWM (pulse width modulation) charge controllers, and up to 10% compared to slower MPPT controllers.
Load output
Excessive battery discharge can be avoided by connecting all loads to the load output.
The load output will disconnect the load when the battery has been discharged to a predetermined voltage.
Otherwise, a smart battery management algorithm can be selected: see Batterylife. The load output is protected against short circuits.
Battery Life: smart battery management
When a solar charge controller cannot fully recharge the battery in one day, the battery often alternates between a “partially charged” state and a “discharged” state. This operating mode (irregular full recharge) will damage lead batteries within a few weeks or months.
The Batterylife algorithm will monitor the battery’s charge state and, if necessary, slightly increase the disconnect level of the load day after day (i.e., it will disconnect the load earlier), until the solar energy produced is sufficient to recharge the battery to nearly 100% of its capacity. From that point, the load disconnect level will be modulated so that a recharge close to 100% is achieved at least once a week.
