Especially in case of cloudy skies, when light intensity is constantly changing, an ultra-fast MPPT controller will improve energy yield by up to 30% compared to PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) charge controllers, and up to 10% compared to slower MPPT controllers.
Load output
Over-discharge of the battery can be prevented by connecting all loads to the load output.
The load output will disconnect the load when the battery has been discharged to a predetermined voltage level.
Alternatively, a smart battery management algorithm can be chosen: see BatteryLife. The load output is protected against short circuit.
Battery Life: smart battery management
When a solar charge controller can not recharge the battery to its full capacity every day, it will often result in the battery being constantly switched between a 'partly charged' and a 'fully discharged' state. This mode of operation (irregular full recharge) will damage lead-acid batteries within a few weeks or months.
The BatteryLife algorithm will monitor the state of charge of the battery, and if needed, will slightly increase the load disconnect voltage day by day (i.e. it will disconnect the load earlier), until the harvested solar power is sufficient to recharge the battery to almost 100%. From that point on, the load disconnect voltage will be modulated, so that a recharge to almost 100% is achieved at least once a week.
