Especially in case of cloudy skies, when light intensity is constantly changing, an ultra-fast MPPT controller will improve energy yield by up to 30 % compared to PWM charge controllers (pulse width modulation), and up to 10 % compared to slower MPPT controllers.

Load output
Deep discharge of the battery can be prevented by connecting all loads to the load output. This load output will disconnect the load when the battery has been discharged to a preset voltage. Alternatively, a smart battery management function can be selected: see BatteryLife. The load output is protected against short circuit.

Battery Life: smart battery management
When a solar charge controller can not recharge the battery to its full capacity every day, it will often result in the battery being constantly cycled between a 'partly charged' and a 'fully discharged' state. This condition (not regularly reaching a full charge) will degrade a lead-acid battery within weeks or months. The BatteryLife algorithm will monitor the use of the battery, and will, if needed, step-by-step increase the load disconnect voltage, (thus disconnecting the load earlier) until the harvested energy is sufficient to almost fully charge the battery every day. From that point on, the load disconnect voltage will be modulated so that the battery is charged to almost 100% every day. This feature can be configured with the SmartSolar app or the ColorControl GX, and it prevents the battery from being degraded from an irregular charging condition.
